In November 2009, under the EU Seventh Framework Programme, six partners signed the KAlundborg CELLulosic Ethanol project (KACELLE), devoted to demonstrating and further optimizing the Kalundborg cellulosic ethanol plant. The project started in August 2009 and was finalised in December 2013. Reporting was finalised with the KACELLE PUBLISHABLE SUMMARY and other required documentation in April 2014.
The purpose of the KACELLE project was to bring the patented Inbicon technology for cellulosic ethanol production from a pre-commercial level to a commercial level, including demonstration of the whole value chain. That means to make the technology available in the market and make it attractive to investors in 4-5 years from 2009.
The project should demonstrate continuous operation under industrial conditions and scale. At the same time, the project should optimise the plant further to lower the overall production costs to improve the competitiveness of the technology. Process steps were chosen that seemed to offer potential for significant cost savings. Specifically, the project would seek to incorporate fermentation of C5 sugars; reduce the energy consumption; improve the water balance; reduce the enzyme consumption; and increase the plant capacity.
In order to cover the whole value chain from the entry of straw into the plant to end-product use in cars, the ethanol produced would be characterized and tested in engine test rigs.
The process would be assessed from an environmental perspective through LCA analysis and results would be published for scientific purposes and for extending the use of the technology to future business partners.
The partners behind the project are industrial players with relevant business roles in the demonstration of this value chain, a research centre, and universities with internationally recognized competences in key areas. Partners are INBICON (DK), DONG Energy (DK), Royal DSM (NL), Statoil (NO), University of Copenhagen – LIFE (DK), University of Minho, Braga (PT), and the German Biomass Research Centre (DE).
