C5-molasses
After the hydrothermal pre-treatment, the biomass is split up in two fractions:
• The fiber fraction, which consists of 50-60% cellulose and 2-10% hemicelluloses, can be enzymatically liquefied and fermented with yeast.
• The liquid fraction contains high levels of C5 sugars, salts, and inhibitors. In our first demo plant, this fraction was used as molasses feed for livestock. At the moment, many other possibilities are open, but only few have come to commercial maturity. However, we’d welcome working with anyone seriously investigating alternative uses of the liquid fraction in order to develop full-scale solutions. We have facilities to test C5 organisms in liquid fermentation broth at pilot scale as well.
