DONG Energy, our parent company
Inbicon is a fully owned subsidiary of DONG Energy, Denmark’s largest energy group. It earns about $7.6 billion USD in annual revenues and employs over 5100 people. It generates electricity and distributes it to a million Danish customers. It explores for oil and natural gas, produces them from North Sea wells, operates oil and gas pipelines and distribution systems.
In 1973, Denmark generated its electricity from oil-fired plants, but, after the OPEC oil embargo, switched to coal. DONG Energy later supplemented it with renewable energy like wheat straw and wood pellets, and today uses over a million tons annually of these solid biofuels. One power station generates 100% of its electricity from renewables. Experimentation with wheat straw led to a practical pathway to second-generation ethanol and the formation of Inbicon.
Today Denmark generates 20% of its power from wind turbines. DONG Energy operates more offshore wind turbines than anyone else. In the past decade, it has designed and built six out of ten of the world’s largest offshore wind farms. In September of 2009, the company brought the world’s largest online, 91 turbines capable of producing 209 megawatts of power - enough for 200,000 homes.
As DONG Energy develops into a leader in clean energy technology, it continues to support Inbicon’s passion to make ethanol work for the world.
